Origin of Our Signature Sandwiches: From Myth to Menu

La Segunda is known for baking history every day, but did you know that our menu is full of history too? Over the course of four generations, the La Segunda menu has taken on a life of its own. There are glimpses of people new and old in the food we serve every day. From current-day employee dedications to stories that have been repeated to the level of legend, each sandwich on the menu has its own history.

1915 Club

Taking it all the way back to the 20th century, The 1915 Club features Cuban bread, smoked ham, oven-roasted turkey, Swiss cheese, bacon, shredded lettuce, tomato, and special sauce. This sandwich honors the iconic founding year of La Segunda. The 1915 Club is a direct tie to La Segunda’s roots, and the triumphant Cuban district of Ybor City. Our historic roots are integral to both our café and our menu! This sandwich is truly an homage not only to La Segunda, but also to our community who make everything possible. When it comes to history, The 1915 Club is full of it as it references the four generations of family that have powered La Segunda.

Tony’s Turkey

Tony’s Turkey is a nod to a regular customer who wouldn’t accept the status quo. A lawyer not used to taking no for an answer, Tony came into the café every day and insisted upon adding a second type of cheese to his sandwich during an era of strict no-substitution rules. Thus, Tony’s Turkey became immortalized into La Segunda history. This fan favorite features Cuban bread, oven-roasted turkey, provolone cheese, Swiss cheese, sliced tomato, pickles, and special sauce. Alongside the Italian Meatball (provolone and parmesan), Tony’s Turkey remains the only sandwich featuring two different kinds of cheese on the menu.

Patrinostro

Possibly the most sentimental sandwich, the Patrinostro is a tribute to Sheila Patrinostro, a beloved employee who is now retired after 50 years of dedication. Officially retired as of April 2024, Sheila leaves behind not just a legacy of caring but also a menu item named in her honor. Sheila started working at La Segunda at 14 years old, and considers herself born into the business as her parents were former owners. Her sandwich is a La Segunda spin on the classic Italian sub, made up of Cuban bread, ham, capicola, mortadella salami, provolone cheese, onion, lettuce, tomato, olive oil, and vinegar. Friends, family, and fans of Sheila are always welcome to stop by and order her sandwich!

Ybor Muffuletta

The Ybor Muffuletta is inspired by the famous New Orleans Muffuletta. Born from Italian influence in New Orleans, the traditional muffuletta sandwich typically includes cured meats, cheese, olive dressing, and is served on a round sesame seed roll. The Ybor Muffuletta serves up a local twist by swapping out the round roll for classic Cuban bread. In addition to our iconic Cuban bread, the sandwich features olive spread, provolone cheese, Genoa salami, smoked ham, mortadella, and capicola. The Ybor Muffuletta offers some New Orleans flavors right here in Tampa Bay. This menu item is yet another example of La Segunda putting our own spin on fan favorites.
